Elite mod AI is a challenge and a change from the sleepy base AI. Playing skirmishes against the AI is a waste of money in itself, as the game is nowhere near as enjoyable as it is in MP, nor are they as fun as the campaign. If you plan on playing SP then play the campaign with various factions. If you plan on playing MP, well, that speaks for itself. I just got The Last Stand only mode and it is online only. It's like you bought the game but don't have the rights to play if you're not online. Should give you a popcap and should be compatible with all future updates.
